Our technology differentiator is the development of a causal understanding of microbial interactions powerful enough to allow the rational construction of designer functional consortia. Our first products seek to reduce the enormous waste in agricultural products due to crop loss to fungal pests in the field and post-harvest.

Opportunity

Boost is seeking an outstanding candidate whose experience in computational biology, microbial ecology and machine learning will position them to creatively and rigorously design, build and expand Boost’s comprehensive bioinformatic platform. You will implement new and innovative methods for identifying, interpreting, and modeling patterns of strain-level interaction within complex microbial communities.

This role has four main pillars of technical responsibility:

1) Build computational pipelines/tools (metagenomics, amplicon, WGS)

2) Engineer databases to leverage strain interaction & phenotypic data

3) ML predictive modeling to elucidate taxonomic & genomic synergy

4) AWS coordination to ensure proper computational resourcing

Additional areas of valuable expertise: data science, biostatistics, pangenomics, software development, NGS, data visualization, LIMS, automation

You have expertise in and passion for applying microbiome research towards the discovery of sustainable microbial products. You will appreciate your role in generating actionable insights driven by your approach to data analysis and engineering. You find it rewarding to democratize bioinformatics and data science by building tools that both you and your colleagues will regularly use to analyze data. You are solutions-oriented, with a desire to make major, tangible impacts on our internal technology, and external impacts on global food and health.

You communicate technical information effectively, through listening, documenting, and presenting. You are excited to collaborate with and mentor others with diverse technical backgrounds and levels of experience. You are independently motivated, and compelled by the opportunity to work in a fast-paced start-up environment with many moving parts. Agility is one of your key attributes and you are able to react and troubleshoot in real time. You are both realistic and optimistic, keen to find the next solution to move our company forward.

Required/Preferred Skills

  • Microbiome analytics: metagenomics, amplicon, a/b diversity, PCoA
  • Coding in R, Python, shell scripting required; Java, C++ preferred
  • Experience with biostatistics, interaction graphs, power analysis, DOE
  • Bioinformatic pipeline development; SnakeMake familiarity preferred
  • Proficient with AWS/high-performance computing, Git version control
  • Experience building or utilizing large relational or graph databases
  • Familiar with ML algorithm development & applied network theory
  • Strong organizational skills; able to prioritize tasks on timelines
  • Commitment to self-development and a growth mindset
  • PhD/Post-Doc in relevant field; 0-3 years of industry experience
