The Advanced Biomedical and Computational Science (ABCS) group is a part of BACS and serves as a hub of translational scientists with expertise in machine learning applied to the interpretation of 2D and 3D biomedical images, clinical and genomics integration, computational chemistry, protein modeling, bioinformatic analysis of omics data, and other applications of computational and data science. ABCS develops state-of-the-art technologies in large-scale data modeling, analysis, and integration and supports the scientific research at the Frederick National Lab by helping translate scientific questions to technical solutions for cancer and biomedical research. Bioinformatics Analyst, Computational Biology

This position at the New York Genome Center is within the computational biology group and will report to a Bioinformatics Scientist. As a Bioinformatics Analyst, you will contribute to the analyses of transcriptome sequencing data (both bulk and single-cell RNA-Seq) generated at NYGC. This includes the maintenance, benchmarking, and continuous improvement of our processing pipelines, as well as... participation in downstream analyses. Additionally, you will apply and implement various tools and algorithms to analyze transcriptome data, collaborate with NYGC staff on developing new tools and with external investigators on the integration of functional genomics results within their scientific projects. About the Role: As a Bioinformatics Scientist, you will use your scientific thinking and engineering skills to develop bioinformatics pipelines, design and analyze experiments, and optimize the operational and clinical performance of bioinformatic algorithms. You will collaborate with laboratory scientists and other bioinformatics scientists & engineers to develop, launch, and improve our clinical diagnostic products. This position will report to a Principal Bioinformatics Scientist. What You Will Bring: • Advanced user of a programming language for data analysis and algorithm development. Python preferred. Knowledgeable of one or more other languages (e.g., R, Julia, C, Rust, Java, etc.) • Able to easily and rapidly explore data using expertise in at least one graphics library (ggplot, altair, plotly, etc.) and knowledgeable of others. • You think carefully about your development tool belt and are comfortable in a shell. Bonus if experienced with containers, HPC, and/or cloud computing. • Expert in one or more statistical or numerical techniques (e.g., regression, probabilistic modeling, neural networks, mathematical programming) and experience applying them to real-world problems. • Track record of using your analyses or developed software to solve scientific problems . NGS and diagnostics experience preferred. • The drive and interest to improve and develop new skills. Awareness for scoping projects and intuition for identifying the most valuable challenges to tackle. • The ability to think critically and creatively from PhD training or equivalent amount of experience What You Will Do: • Develop methods to reliably measure and improve performance of bioinformatics pipelines using historical data, simulations, and/or models. • Improve pipeline efficiency to enable rapid research and development of algorithms • Design studies with laboratory scientists to characterize and identify assay improvements • Perform data analyses and write conclusions as reports to support R&D and product development • Write and review software with engineers to bring algorithms to a production lab • Use your expertise to identify and help plan valuable initiatives and enable team members to be more independent and productive. We are seeking a highly motivated Bioinformatics Analyst to work on the analysis and interpretation of high-throughput genomic and clinical data, to investigate immune cell crosstalk within the tumor microenvironment. This individual will be affiliated primarily with developing software to simulate tumor-derived NGS data! Pay Rate: $40-$48/hr depending on experience... ~1 year contract with possible extension~ A successful Bioinformatics Analyst will be expected to: • Work with new genomic therapies • Develop software to simulate tumor-derived NGS data • Skilled in a modern open source language (e.g. Python, R, Julia) and associated stack of data/genomics-related libraries • High degree of comfort with data wrangling, summarizing data, and performing basic statistical analyses • Comfortable in linux command line • Familiar with NGS data (RNAseq and/or DNAseq of any kind, strong preference for individuals who have spent some time visualizing coverage tracks and/or digging around in BAM files) • Great organizational and communication skills Requirements: • M.S. degree in bioinformatics/biomed eng/biochem/chem/mol bio/computer science preferred or B.S. degree with experience. • Experience with DNA and/or RNA Seqnce Bioconductor • Experience with NGS data • Experience with Python or R • Cleanly documented, well organized software package that is available on a public github/bitbucket/gitlab and/or published through a major software repository
