Senior Data Scientist, Bioinformatics & Computational Biology
The Senior Data Scientist will design, develop, curate algorithms and software tools and lead data science research projects for Professor Wenyi Wang's lab in the Department of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Dr. Wang's laboratory performs research aiming to gain new knowledge in the evolution of the human genome as well as the cancer genome. JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES... Sr. Bioinformatics Analyst
Job Description The Division of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) is recruiting for a Bioinformatics Specialist (IS). The IS functions as a collaborator who applies bioinformatic and statistical expertise to the design, implementation, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of research and... clinical omics studies in various disease fields, including but not limited to cancer, cardiometabolic diseases, and Alzheimer’s Disease. The work is performed under the supervision of the Lead Bioinformatician faculty PI at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. The successful candidate will become a fundamental component of a multidisciplinary, inter-institutional team. The Division of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics is the UMSOM hub for biostatistics and bioinformatics. We also house the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Service of the UM Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) as well as being one of the UMSOM Center for Innovative Biomedical Resources (CIBR) core facilities. Skills and knowledge in a variety of bioinformatics and computational biology tools and techniques to analyze genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics data (omics technologies). Strong programming skills to develop novel analytical tools as needed by projects, including but not limited to Python, R, SAS, STATA, and cloud computing infrastructure. Basic training in statistical methodology. Familiar with commonly used public bioinformatics databases. "Self-Starter" attitude with the ability to work in dynamic work environments. Team player attitude with a willingness to lead when necessary. Ability to prioritize and organize various tasks on projects. Excellent spoken and written communication skills. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite. Qualifications Education: Master’s degree in bioinformatics or related fields. Ph.D. degree preferred. Experience: Ability to develop informatics strategies customized to individual projects with minimal supervision. Other: Research experience with cancer, heart disease, or Alzheimer’s disease fields. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Familiarity with sing-cell omics technologies. Knowledge of cloud technologies such as AWS or Google Cloud.
